Is it a good idea for the 2015 BMW F87 M2 to share the S55 turbo 3.0 liter inline-6 from the M3/M4 detuned to 369 horsepower?

This is a similar question to what BimmerBoost raised last year regarding an M2 model. A ton of speculation took place from the various culprits on the 2015 F87 M2 this year and one site even claimed to definitively know the M2 would have a more aggressively tuned N55 from the M235i.

Our position was (and remains) that nobody knows what the hell they are talking about and that they are simply guessing to get attention. CAR is claiming to definitively know what the specifications for the M2 are and here is their take.

CAR states the F87 M2 will arrive in 2015 and offer 369 horsepower and and 384 lb-ft of torque featuring a detuned S55 inline-6 borrowed from the F80/F82 M3 and M4. Ok, fine, that certainly is a possibility.

CAR does not state how the engine will be detuned, who at BMW stated this is the engine if anyone even did, or any real solid info on the motor. Is it just a software detune? Is BMW mating the motor to a DCT in the 2-Series finally? Will the motor get a different turbocharger or any physical hardware differences?

You would think someone who supposedly has access to an inside source at BMW would ask these questions. If the M2 gets a detuned S55 and it is only detuned through software we can declare right now the M2 is the greatest tuning value in the history of the BMW lineup considering how underrated the S55 engine is and what it gains from basic tuning.

If it is detuned through hardware means to protect the M3/M4 this is not a big deal anyway as on paper the M3/M4 and the M2 will have the same potential.

If it features an N55 like the M235i as some reported then it does not have a real motor and BMW is really getting out of control with their cost cutting and their watering down of the M brand.

All CAR has done is create a bunch of hype. That sells magazines. Good for them but they aren't getting our money.
