Fiat 126p with Honda VTEC turbo embodies the pocket rocket definition
After yesterday’s turbocharged all-wheel drive Trabant, we now bring another relevant example of a well-executed pocket rocket.This Poland-built Fiat 126p no longer has a two-cylinder engine as a Lithuanian tuner by the name of Tomas Nenartovic managed to squeeze in a Honda 1.6-liter VTEC engine. He took it from an old Civic Si where it offered 125 bhp (93 kW), but for this application he slapped on a turbo to take output to around 170 bhp (127 kW). That might not be overly impressive, but keep in mind a stock 126p weighs as little as 580 kg (1,278 lbs). This one is obviously heavier due to the significantly larger engine, but it still must have an excellent power-to-weight ratio.
We can’t really label this as a sleeper since the extremely wide wheel arches and the fat tires are a clear giveaway we aren’t dealing with a stock Fiat 126p. It isn’t as fast as the Trabant, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting taking into account the 126p is not really tuning material. The end result is a perfect example that with enough mechanical expertise, you can go really fast even if you are on a tight budget.
