We
know that we use the word awesome a lot – and God help us, sometimes in
vain – and we do apologize for that. But if there is one case where it’s
completely warranted to use that word, it is in describing this one-off
Edo Ferrari 575 GTS. Another word would be confusing, but in a good
way.
You see, Ferrari themselves did make an
open-top version of the 550 Maranello back in 2001 and they called it
the Barchetta. The 550 was then replaced by the similar-looking but more
advanced 575, on which Edo Competition’s 575 GTS is based. But they
never made a convertible version of that. They only made a limited-run
SuperAmerica version with a rotating hardtop.
So yes, Edo Ferrari 575 GTS is probably a
Barchetta with 575 engine and running gear. The 5.4 liter 65 degree V12
engine in the 575 makes 515 horsepower and 588 lb-ft of torque –
compared to the 550’s 485 hp and 420 lb-ft – and it sends all of it to
the rear wheels via an electro-actuated paddle-shift transaxle
transmission.
The technicalities aside, it is the
styling where Edo Ferrari 575 GTS really comes into its own and flaunts
its “one-off” badge. The wide body Ferrari features custom bumpers and
fenders along with an aggressive vented bonnet, a large rear diffuser
and a custom interior with Alcantara bucket seats and a top-notch audio
system, apparently. This car is hardly a rival for the coachbuilt
Ferraris made by Pininfarina, but it’s a very interesting proposition
nonetheless.
