Junya Watanabe of Rocky Auto
is a living legend, simply put. He's the benchmark when it comes to
classic Japanese car builds and his resume numbers into the hundreds.
These are just an inkling of
what Watanabe-san has built in his career. To be honest, we wish we
could feature everything that comes out of his shop because every car is
pure fire! However, it's not the easiest task getting to his garage in
Okazaki City (southeast of Nagoya). So when we come across his builds at
Tokyo Auto Salon, we make sure to take our time and soak in all of
Rocky Auto's awesomeness, such as when we stumbled upon this wicked S30
at the '16 show.
On the outside, the Z features
some modifications we recognize from past Rocky Auto builds before, for
example the carbon-fiber bumpers, fenders, rear wing and hood. What
stopped us in our track laid in the engine bay - Nissan's 3.5-liter,
300hp V6 known as the VQ35. A common motor we typically see in the 350Z
and Infiniti G35; however, what's even cooler about this car is the
interior of a 350Z has also been retrofitted into the old school S30.
Beefier powertrain, matched with modern comfort and technology in a
classic body? It's the formula Watanabe-san at Rocky Auto has followed
with all of his builds and we can't deny, it's a formula works!
