More power is always nice, right?
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is a monstrous muscle car
that has been engineered to destroy a track and any back road with
ease. While we think that the Shelby GT350 is perfection in its stock
form, Hennessey Performance thought otherwise and has given the muscle car more power. Unlike the ridiculously powerful variant
we saw before, Hennessey’s HPE575 model is a little more modest. Power
is up over the Shelby GT350 and 350R’s, but it’s not as high as we'd
thought it would be.
Thanks to new stainless steel long-tube headers, a
stainless steel exhaust mid-pipe with high-flow catalytic converters and
a HPE engine management upgrade, the Shelby GT350’s 5.2-liter Voodoo V8
now makes 575 horsepower and 511 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping
track, that’s an increase of 49 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque over the
engine’s stock output of 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. Again, that’s
not a drastic increase. Other upgrades for the HPE575 package include a
rear Hennessey exterior badge, HPE575 exterior badges, a Hennessey
HPE575 serial-numbered interior plaque, Hennessey HPE575 serial-numbered
engine bay plaque and a serial-numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
The certificate and
interior plaque are signed by John Hennessey, while the engine bay
plaque is signed by the HPE technician. With a modest increase of only
49 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque, one would think that the HPE575 package
would be relatively cheap, but it’s not. It checks in at $6,950,
including installation and a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. For
enthusiasts who are a little handy, the parts are a more modest $4,995
plus shipping. Only 100 units of the Shelby GT350 HPE575 package will be
built for the 2016 model year, but we can’t help but wonder if the
package is worth the asking price.
